Getting started
March 16th 2008 06:38
Wow, I have my own blog. I'm always reading other people's blogs and reading about people with blogs and now I am one of them. Yes, small things excite me.
This site is not particularly flash at the moment, though I did succeed in making it purple, at least. I will be trying to make it look nicer, but I'm a bit of a klutz when it comes to that kind of thing, so it may take a while.
But, just to get things started on the actual topic of this blog, I will state for record that I am currently reading 'The Stone Key' by Isobelle Carmody, the long awaited sixth book in the Obernewtyn Chronicles series. Is anyone else reading that now? It just came out, and if you have read the first five books, then you are probably surprised that you lived long enough to get the sixth one.
I don't want to be rude, because I think Isobelle Carmody is a good writer, and I read and enjoyed just about all of her books. But the first book in the series was published around the time that I was born, and that's a long time to drag your readership along. Especially since she has been writing other books in the meantime. These other books are good to, but when you really want to know what happens to the Misfits of Obernewtyn, it's a bit irritating to know that the author isn't working on it.
Annoyance aside, I'm very happy that the next book is finally available. It's a big one, too. Have you seen it? It's roughly the size of the Yellow Pages. I'm only up to chapter five at the time of writing this, so I haven't gotten very far, except that I now know there is trouble in Saithwold.
A fair bit of the first chapters are filled with Elspeth reminiscing on past events, just to remind you where the story is up to. If you have read the previous books recently (as I have), then you'll be fine. If you haven't read them for awhile, then how difficult you find it depends on how good your memory is, but there are quite a few characters to remember, so a refresher is probably a good thing. If you haven't read the earlier books, you probably should before starting The Stone Key, because you're probably not going to get much out of it without knowing how the situations the characters find themselves in arose, and why you should care.
That's all I have to say on it at the moment, since I haven't read very far. But I'd be interested to know if there is anyone else reading it at the same time, or whether they gave up on the series by now.
