The Unholy Allure of Horror

What is it about horror, the nature of horror and the rather perverse fascination it seems to hold? In theory horror explores the dark and forbidden, the parts of humanity and society that are kept marginalised because they are considered wrong or sick. But so many horror films are exclusively about the shock and gore factors to the exclusion of all other elements particularly intelligence and quality.
Given the fact that horror enjoys one of the worst genre reputations why does it continue to exert such a perverse fascination? Is it just a desperate need to feel something, anything? Fear is after all one of the most powerful emotions, followed closely by disgust. Or is it something else more sinister. Simple voyeurism or a sad reflection on the state of humanity?
Perhaps it is a mirror that reveals our deepest darkest fears and desires which exert a seductive loaded allure that fascinates as it repels?
